Back in 2015 we’d just moved back from DC to live with my parents while we looked for our first house. We toured a few homes on our tight budget but nothing seemed to fit.
One day I saw Mattaniah’s sign on a huge corner lot in downtown Hoquiam and decided to look inside. The exterior had been completely re-done but the inside was down to it’s studs. I called Kevin who was freshly into his Real Estate career and told him I wanted to to make this our home and he laughed, then said I had to be joking. Of course I was not and we bought it 😂
Looking back now, this house shaped a lot of what we do today.
Everything we do, we’re better as a family. We used to work in separate career fields but found our passions intertwined with real estate. He is great with numbers and people and I love homes and design.
Kevin has an incredible skill set in determining deals, project breakdown, and keeping us (me really) on track. While I focus on looking at the home as a shell, an finding it’s highest and best use with the freedom to be creative a long the way. Our girls also join in every step, from the “ugly homes” as they call them, to home depot trips, and staging. They know far more about real estate and renovating at 5 and 3 then I did when we first bought this fixer 5 years ago.
then their is our foundation. Just like the literal importance in a home, our knowledge base of home rehab on the Harbor started right here. Kevin put his blood (literally), sweat, and tears (mine anyway) into learning every renovation process and slowly put this home back together. We had tons of help from family and friends along the way and in total took about a year to complete. We now use other amazing contractors to do the work so we can focus on buying and selling real estate but physically knowing how to do it is key to making sure it’s done well, and cost effectively.
We ultimately sold this home and used the profits to buy, restore, and live in a duplex while we renovated our first commercial space: Brunch 101.
It was the jump start we needed, even if it was somewhat unintentional. That’s how life is right?0
